  Oleg Tamulilingan

In 1931, the first full group of Balinese dancers and musicians performed in Europe, presenting a series of concerts at the Colonial Exhibition in Paris.

A group from Ubud, Gianyar Province, led by Cokorda Gede Sukawati, danced for wildly enthusiastic audiences which included the great French director and dramatic theorist, Antonin Artaud.

Legong and Kebyar Duduk were on the program. When the performance was being assembled it became apparent to the leaders that there was a shortage of material suitable for presentation to Western audiences.

Because of language and cultural barriers, many of the Balinese dramatic dance genres were felt to be unsuitable. Accordingly, I Mario was asked to create a new dance for the tour in Kebyar style.

His creation called Tamulilingan (Bumble-bees), is a pengipuk (courtship dance) for two performers, male and female. They represent in abstract fashion two bumble bees which are playing in the garden.
