  Panji Semirang

A great deal of new dance compositions has been done in Bali since Mario first created Kebyar Duduk, and with few exceptions, Kebyar has been the dominant style visible in the new works.

The still-popular Panji Semirang, for example, was composed in 1933 by the great Legong teacher, I Nyoman Kaler, of Kelandis village, Badung Province. This piece was composed to answer the need for a composition in Kebyar style suitable for a female dancer.

It had been learnt earlier that women could do the movements required in Kebyar Duduk but had trouble with capturing the appropriate moods. In Panji Semirang the dancer portrays Princess Candra Kirana, well known from the Malat poem as well as from Gambuh.

The princess , in disguise as a young man, is portrayed at a time when she is searching through the world for her lover, Panji. The dance itself similar to Kebyar Duduk in form and style.

The dancers portraying a sequence of moods, as she searches in vain for Panji and then exults to see him in the audience. The short piece concludes on a joyful note.

Because its no longer restricted to male performers, Kebyar dance came to be known popularly as Kebyar Bebancihan (Neutered Kebyar).
