  Leko

THIS type of Joged is very closely associated with Legong. It's performed by young female dancers, 12 to 14 years of age, who invariably have previously been performers of Legong.

Today Leko is only found in Tabanan Province, where groups exist in Tunjuk and Bongan Jawa villages. The performance opens with a thirty-minute introduction identical to the opening section of the Legong dance.

After that the Ngibing begins, accompanied by a special, very lively, composition which is played in fast tempo. Only two of the young dancers perform in this part, one by one.

Each of them carries a loose scarf in one hand and a fan in the other. When the soloist begins this section, men shout from all over the audience, urging her to choose them.

Each dancer improvises with several men in turn and then retires while her colleague take her place. The girls go out into the audience to select her partner; she designates the lucky man she chooses by tapping him with her closed fan.

Once the male reaches the stage, the leko wraps her scarf around his waist, and the two perform together for a few minutes.

A good joged is esteemed for her skill at following closely and responding deftly to the dance overtures of her partner.
